ALEXANDRITE JEWELLERY

Choose ever colourful Alexandrite gemstone jewellery

Alexandrite, a June birthstone and the celebratory birthstone for 55th wedding anniversaries, is a variety of Chrysoberyl with a hardness of 8.5 on the Mohs scale. It got its name since it was first mined in the Ural Mountains of Russia and was apparently first discovered on the birthday of Tsar Alexander II and became very popular in Imperial Russia.

Alexandrite, is one of the most desired and sought-after gemstones in the world since it possesses some impressive properties of colour changing and sometimes exhibits a cat’s eye phenomenon. The unusual colour change phenomenon has meant that Alexandrite has been described as “emerald by day, ruby by night”. This description reveals that the colour change is as a result of different lighting conditions where the stone colour will change in evening light (in incandescent light or candles) from natural daylight. The degree of colour change, and what colours the stone changes between, varies significantly from stone to stone.

Colour changes vary in rarity with bluish green to purplish red; greenish blue to light blue being the rarest and the most desirable. Light greenish yellow to light orange being more common. The cost of Alexandrite is driven by size of gemstone, stone clarity, colour intensity and strength of colour change.
